Lyrics

Modern time pressures Like an impossible dance It terrors my thinking I got sympathy for Lance The little joy From little niggle work Makes me eager for more And eager to score. But in my defense And to my surprise When it makes no sense When it's not by design I'll praise the Lord Most high The ties that bind You and me Keep us blind to a certain degree You carry my burden You carry my soul I’m fraying your nerves I wonder when you go But in my defense And to my surprise When it makes no sense When it's not by design I'll praise the Lord most high But in my defense and to my surprise you too make no sense and it's not by design I’ll praise the Lord He requires more than I can afford And I’ll praise the Lord With my reluctant love and my broken work I’ll praise the Lord Raise me above all I had to distort And I'll praise the Lord I'll praise the Lord most high

The story behind the song

This song took years to finish. “I often got stuck,” says Tonneau. “The melody or words would circle around for months, sometimes years, before they finally landed.” Each verse carries traces of different times and moods — the ambition of work, the tension of relationships, the quiet surprise of acceptance. It’s not a song of certainty, but one of hesitant rejoicing.
